Converting double garage into a habitable self contained annex

Paul and Tony wanted to utilise their mums existing double garage into a habitable self contained annex, making it a great place for friends and family to stay but more importantly for when their Mum needed a more environmentally friendly place without stairs and the other drawbacks a large house has for an elderly lady.

The big thing and the reason why we believe this is such a special project is the memories of the garage, this garage was the place where Paul and Tony played and hung out growing up and it was a huge part of the family’s history and the brothers didn’t want to completely loose touch of the space.

The garage itself was in need of major repair, loose brick works, holes in the floor and roof which was in a bad need of restoration, one of the main concerns for the brothers was that the garage would need to be demolished and re built and by doing so removing the original character and memories they had of the place.

We wanted everyone to be happy and wanted to restore the garage instead of re building, we took care of all the construction side of things by installing a new roof, pouring and screeding a new floor and restoring all the brick work by using a brick match that was completely in keeping with the original bricks, leaving the look from the outside as good if not better than the original garage as it has all the memories and visual look of the original space that the family enjoyed so much in the past. This was our first objective to which were happy with the result and moreover so were the family.

We then looked to the internals and how to make this into a perfectly liveable, comfortable and functional space. We created a kitchen living space with large patio doors leading out into the existing garden where Pauline liked to spend her time and installed a kitchen lisaing with the family to establish all their needs both cosmetic and functional. We created a bedroom and installed a new window to enable Pauline to see out into the other side of her garden and let in a decent amount of natural light, a fully tiled wet room with a large walk in shower completed with all other bathroom items, to ensure that every need is catered for making this a truly functional self contained extension of their home.

To finish the conversion we installed some nice large windows at the front of the property complete with a brick match to tie everything in nicely to the rest of the home, finally finished with a bespoke made entrance door and some cedar style cladding to help it pop! We were only happy to help the Family achieve what they wanted from their conversion, allowing them to have a beautiful extension of their home that will be something for all the family to use for generations to come.
